•Miami-based Hemingway Rum Co. has unveiled Papa’s Pilar, a new range of artisanal aged rums. Named for Ernest Hemingway’s private yacht, the brand features two Sherry cask-finished expressions—Papa’s Pilar Blonde and Papa’s Pilar Dark. The Blonde is an 84-proof three-year-old rum, while its Dark counterpart is 86 proof and billed as an Aged Solera 24 dark rum. Pilar Blonde and Dark are priced at $29.99 and $39.99 a 750-ml., respectively. Hemingway Rum will initially launch both expressions in Florida, with additional markets to follow.
•Colorado-based Montanya Distillers is expanding distribution into Florida this month with Republic National Distributing Company (RNDC). Montanya Oro ($34.99 a bottle) and Platino ($29.99) rums will be officially launched as part of the Miami Rum Renaissance in April, but will be available immediately. Montanya tells Shanken News Daily its gross revenues jumped 74% in 2012, mostly driven by growth in their home Colorado market and new distribution with Young’s Market and RNDC in California, Texas, Georgia, Louisiana and other states. The company recently expanded its distillery to keep pace with rising demand.
•Wirtz Beverage Illinois has added the range of beer importer and producer Vanberg & DeWulf to its growing beer offering. The deal will give Wirtz the exclusive statewide rights to sell and market Vanberg & DeWulf’s portfolio of nearly 50 beers starting this month. Founded in 1982, Vanberg & DeWulf specializes in Belgian beers, but also includes labels from France, Italy, Iceland and the U.K. Wirtz is currently expanding its craft beer portfolio to include local, regional and national partners.
