•New Ulm, Minnesota-based August Schell Brewing is launching the seventh entry in its Stag Series, Stag #7 American Barleywine. Rolling out February 28, Stag #7 is made with American hops, fermented with an American ale yeast and aged for over three months. The resulting barleywine is 9.5% abv and characterized by a strong malt flavor. Stag #7 joins a variety of limited edition Stag Series brews, including #6 Citra Pils, #5 Czech Dark and #4 Burton Ale, among others. Originally launched in 2010, August Schell’s Stag Series was created to showcase old German brewing recipes, many of which are no longer used today.
•New craft brewer Los Angeles Ale Works is set to launch its first beer this month. Ale Works will roll out Gams-Bart beer to six bars around Los Angeles, backed by a series of events beginning February 23. A Bavarian-style Roggenbier, Gams-Bart is similar to a Hefeweizen, but uses rye instead of wheat. Founded by friends Kristofor Barnes and John Rockwell, Los Angeles Ale Works is in the process of developing more beers as well as a black rice sake.
