Napa Vintner George Vare Dies at 76April 18, 2013
Napa Vintner George Vare, the businessman and innovator behind brands like Geyser Peak and Luna Vineyards, died April 12 at age 76. In addition to building Geyser Peak into a 700,000-case player in the 1970s, Vare introduced bag-in-box wines to the U.S. In the 1990s he partnered with former Beringer president Mike Moone and others to acquire Beringer from Nestle, taking the company public in 1997, and then brokering the sale of Beringer Wine Estates to Australian drinks giant Foster’s in 2000.
