Legendary Aussie Vintner Peter Lehmann Dies At 82June 28, 2013
Peter Lehmann, one of the pioneers in Australia’s rise to prominence as a global wine producing region, died this morning in Adelaide at the age of 82. Inextricably linked to the Barossa region—seat of his namesake winery—Lehmann had battled kidney disease for many years.
Lehmann is renowned for having built strong and supportive relationships with Barossa growers when he launched his winery in 1982—a difficult economic period for many vintners in the area. Lehmann retired from the business in 2002, but remained in Barossa and continued as part-owner of the winery.
Peter Lehmann Wines, which have racked up 50 90-plus scores from Wine Spectator over the years, are part of the Hess Collection range in the U.S. market. As reported exclusively by SND early last year, the brand has recently been revamped to highlight the contributions and influence of its founder, with Lehmann’s silhouette and his signature phrase, “My word is my bond,” now appearing on its labels and other materials.Tagged : Australia, wine
