The Wine Group To Market Gancia In U.S.

The Wine Group has been awarded exclusive U.S. sales and marketing rights to Gancia, the Italian sparkling wine brand. The agreement covers Gancia’s Prosecco, Moscato D’Asti, Moscato Rosé and Asti Spumante sparkling wines.

Suggested retail pricing for the Prosecco and Moscato D’Asti labels is $13.99, while the Moscato Rosé is $12.99 and the Asti Spumante is $11.99. Gancia’s total U.S. volume in 2011 was 65,000 cases, according to Impact Databank.

Gancia is owned by Russian Standard, which acquired control in 2011. “Sparkling wine is growing quickly around the world, and we’re very committed to Gancia,” said Russian Standard president and founder Roustam Tariko. “I’ve spent time there, and its 150-year history is incredible. To build a facility like Gancia has today would require a hundred million dollars.”

In building Gancia, Tariko said he hopes to raise the overall profile of Italian sparkling wine. “The three leading sparkling wine producers are France, Italy and Spain,” he noted. “Spain recently has had more success globally than Italy, and that’s not totally justified. Italy has much more credibility in terms of products, regions and global track record. I believe Italy should assert its role in sparkling wine. It has fabulous products—not just Asti but also Prosecco and others. We have an ambitious plan for Gancia in the major markets.”

Tariko added that a longer-term objective for Gancia is to develop a new upscale sparkling wine in the metodo classico style.
