Major Brands Acquires Fellow Missouri Wholesaler Garco, Bolstering Wine BusinessDecember 20, 2013
Major Brands, long Missouri’s biggest spirits and wine distributor, has acquired Garco Wine Co., a wine distributor that, like Major, is a third-generation family-owned company based in St. Louis. Financial terms of the deal weren’t disclosed.
Major Brands CEO Sue McCollum told the St. Louis Post Dispatch that the addition of Garco—which handles the Opus One and Robert Mondavi brands, among others, in Missouri—will boost Major’s fine wine sales by around 15% next year. Major has also named Garco president Michael Cohen as its sales director of new business development.
Major is seeking new business after Diageo moved to Glazer’s in Missouri earlier this year and Bacardi USA and Luxco also pulled their brands, in the wake of a court dispute over distributor franchise rights in Missouri. Around the same time, Pernod Ricard USA, whose portfolio had been split between Major and Glazer’s in Missouri, appointed Major as its exclusive distributor for the state.Tagged : distributors, Missouri
