Wine Spectator: U.S. Wine Shipping Laws, State By State

July 17, 2014

With the key wine-consuming state of Massachusetts agreeing in recent days to allow direct wine shipments to consumers, the direct-shipping issue is making headlines again. Wine Spectator has compiled a comprehensive list of the wine shipping laws in all 50 states, with detailed information on how much wine, from which purveyors, residents can legally buy, along with two maps, one for winery shipping and one for retailer shipping.

The number of states that permit winery direct-to-consumer shipping has risen from 27 in 2005 to 40 as of January 2015, when Massachusetts’ winery direct-shipping law will go into effect (both out-of-district winery and retailer shipping are permitted in the District of Columbia as well). In that same time, the number of states permitting out-of-state retailer direct-to-consumer shipping has fallen, from 18 states in 2005 to just 14 today.
