A&P Bankruptcy Filing Creates Uncertain Future For Its Liquor Store BusinessJuly 22, 2015
The fate of some 18 liquor stores operated by supermarket chain A&P remains uncertain after the company’s bankruptcy filing earlier this week. New Jersey-based A&P operates stand-alone liquor stores in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, but they were not among the assets in the purchase agreements announced by Acme Markets Inc. and Ahold’s Stop & Shop Supermarket Co.
A&P’s liquor stores operate under the A&P Wine & Spirits and Best Cellars banners in the tri-state area, while a number of A&P grocery stores also sell beverage alcohol. A&P acquired the Best Cellars concept, co-founded by sommelier Josh Wesson, in 2007. The supermarket giant operates nearly 300 locations under the A&P, Best Cellars, Food Basics, Food Emporium, Pathmark, Superfresh and Waldbaum’s banners.
