Bordeaux’s Growth In The U.S. Market: A Progress Report From America’s Wine Retailers

June 20, 2016

Despite years of soaring prices, lackluster vintages and a generational shift in consumption patterns, sales of Bordeaux in the U.S. have been recovering far more rapidly than might be expected.

While the classified growths remain out of reach even for high-end consumers, wines from appellations like Bordeaux Supérieur (up 81% since 2010) and Côtes de Bordeaux (up 83% in the same period) are providing major growth opportunities.

Driven by that success, total shipments of Bordeaux wine to the United States reached 182 million euros ($225m) last year—up 105% from 2010, according to Impact Databank. While that value figure is still below the 2003 peak of 279 million euros ($313m), Bordeaux clearly has shown dramatic improvement. In its full report, Market Watch surveys America’s retailers for their take on the state of Bordeaux wines in the U.S. market.
