Skurnik Wines And Spirits Will Launch New California Operation

March 1, 2017

Skurnik Wines and Spirits, the New York-based importer of European wine estates including the Terry Theise Estate Selections from Germany, Austria and Champagne, among other labels, will launch a California operation in May.

The new unit, called Skurnik Wines West, will be based in San Francisco and serve the entire state of California. Skurnik Wines West will be led by industry veteran Brian Sypher, whose career includes a 10-year stint with Skurnik in New York as general sales manager. For the past six years, Sypher has been general manager of Soter Vineyards in Willamette Valley, Oregon.

Skurnik Wines West will start with a sales force of between 8-10 people, with plans to expand. The portfolio thus far includes many of the long time suppliers to Skurnik’s east coast operations, with California, Oregon, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, New Zealand and Australia all in the mix.

In addition to being an importer, Skurnik is known for its wine and spirits distributorships in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. “For years, our winery partners have been practically begging us to expand into California,” said Skurnik president and COO Harmon Skurnik. “Now we’re ready.”

“We’ve spent a lot of time in California, sourcing wines for our East coast businesses,” added CEO Michael Skurnik. “There’s a need in California for a distributor with our experience and know-how, so we think the timing is right.” —David Fleming
