Lost Spirits Wins Two Key Patents, Plans To Expand Its Portfolio Of Rapid-Aged Spirits

March 31, 2017

Lost Spirits Technology LLC has won two patents for its spirits maturation process from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The patent applications (14/594,944 and 14/795,841) describe the process for maturing spirits through heat-driven esterification and photocatalytic polymer degradation of oak barrel staves. Through this technology Lost Spirits can create chemical reactions in spirits in less than a week that are similar to those that occur in oak barrels over a period of decades.

Lost Spirits founder Bryan Davis initially developed this accelerated maturation technology by nearly matching the chemical signature of a 20-year-old rum. The company has since used the technology for other spirits, including its recently released Abomination whisky series, which combines Islay whisky with charred and toasted oak staves seasoned with California late harvest Riesling. Lost Spirits now plans to design other labels with this technology, aiming to create what it calls “a new spirits growth platform.”
