Now Face West: James Molesworth Prepares To Take On California Cabernet

August 17, 2018

Last month, Wine Spectator announced a change in its lineup of California wine tasters, with longtime lead California critic James Laube stepping back from tasting new releases to turn his focus to cover stories and columns for the magazine, as well as vertical and retrospective tastings. In Laube’s stead, Wine Spectator named veteran critic James Molesworth as its new reviewer for California Cabernet Sauvignon.

Molesworth joined Wine Spectator in 1997 after working in wine retail and as a sommelier. Since 2010, he has been the lead taster for Bordeaux, giving him a solid background in wines based on Cabernet Sauvignon. In recent days, as Molesworth prepared for his first official trip to the Golden State, he shared his perspective of the California winescape, and what he’s looking forward to learning, in this interview with the magazine.
