Pernod Ricard Sales Surge 11%, With 15% Growth In The U.S.

October 20, 2011

Pernod Ricard hit €1.987 billion ($2.7b) in sales in the three months through September, its fiscal first quarter, on organic growth of 11%. The French drinks group characterized the U.S. spirits market’s trend as “rather positive” during the period. Pernod’s organic sales growth in the States came in up 15% across the group and 16% for its top 14 strategic brands. Among those, strong gains for Jameson (which rose 53%), The Glenlivet, Chivas Regal and Martell, as well as a “revitalization” of Malibu, stood out. Absolut, the company’s largest brand at 11 million cases, “remained stable” by value in the first quarter. Pernod’s sales across its Americas region, also including Canada and Latin America, rose 14% to €508 million ($696m).

Elsewhere, Pernod’s portfolio continued its swift progress in the BRIC markets of Brazil, Russia, India and China, where sales were up 17%, 26%, 29% and 25% respectively. Secondary Asian markets like Vietnam, Indonesia and Taiwan (as well as global duty free) were also up double-digits, while local brand struggles contributed to declines in Thailand and South Korea. Across Asia, sales were up 16% to €794 million ($1.1b). Europe (up 3% to €524m/$718m overall) provided mixed results, with Germany rising 3%, the U.K. falling 4% and France remaining roughly flat.

Pernod Ricard CEO Pierre Pringuet said he expects the trend of slow growth in mature markets and dynamic sales trends in emerging markets to continue over the rest of the fiscal year. He forecast the group’s full-year organic profit growth to come in “close to 6%.”
