Total Wine’s New Board Of Directors Holds First Meeting, Names Adrian Bellamy Chairman

November 22, 2011

This past Saturday afternoon, Total Wine & More concluded the first-ever meeting of its board of directors, led by board chairman Adrian Bellamy. The new board represents a significant strategic step for family-owned Total Wine, which now operates 76 stores in 11 states.

“We’d gone 20 years and reached $1 billion in sales, but in order to get to the next level, we felt that creating a diverse board of seasoned experts would be extremely helpful in moving us forward,” said David Trone, who co-owns Total Wine with his brother Robert.

Bellamy is best known for his 12-year tenure as chairman and CEO of Duty Free Shoppers Group Ltd. (DFS). He has also served as chairman of the board of Gucci, and he’s currently chairman of Williams-Sonoma.

Other executives on the Total Wine board include Judith Sprieser, the former CEO of Transora, which was established in 2000 and became the largest e-marketplace serving the consumer products industry before it merged with UCCnet in 2005; Barry Judge, executive vice president and chief marketing Officer of Best Buy Co., Inc., the largest consumer electronics retailer in the United States; Peter B. Saunders, former CEO of Body Shop International PLC, a retailer of skin and hair care products in 60 countries; and Kevin Peters, president of Office Depot, Inc. Including David and Robert Trone, Adrian Bellamy and those four executives, Total Wine’s board contains seven members in all.

The board’s initial priority “will be to develop the best team, find the right people, get them trained and let them run and execute,” said Trone. Potomac, Maryland-based Total Wine is currently focused on expanding into new markets such as Dallas, Texas, and Albuquerque, New Mexico. It’s also exploring real estate opportunities in Washington state, following the recent vote there to end state control of beverage alcohol sales.

Trone said the board will meet four times a year. Its next meeting will take place in mid-February.
