Sparkling Wines Bubbling Over: SymphonyIRI
December 12, 2011While table wine comprises the lion’s share of the U.S. wine market, sparkling wines have been outperforming the industry, according to the most recent data from Chicago-based SymphonyIRI Group. Off-premise sparkling wine volumes increased 9.3% in the 52-week period ending November 27 to nearly 3 million cases, while value rose 9.6% to $349.5 million. Table wines, meanwhile, grew 5% by volume and 6.3% by value in the same period.
Andre, Cook’s and Korbel remain the nation’s biggest sparkling wine brands, but Barefoot Bubbly, Verdi, Piper Sonoma and Mumm Napa are all seeing double-digit growth by value and volume. The $8-$12.99 segment is the fastest-growing sector, with double-digit growth posted by the higher-priced $13-$17.99 and $18-$34.99 segments. Imports have outpaced domestic sparkling wines, according to SymphonyIRI, particularly those from Italy and up-and-coming Australia. Prosecco recorded the most impressive growth year-to-date among all sparkling wine styles, surging 77% by volume and 70% in dollar terms.
