Sparkling Wines Bubbling Over: SymphonyIRI

December 12, 2011

While table wine comprises the lion’s share of the U.S. wine market, sparkling wines have been outperforming the industry, according to the most recent data from Chicago-based SymphonyIRI Group. Off-premise sparkling wine volumes increased 9.3% in the 52-week period ending November 27 to nearly 3 million cases, while value rose 9.6% to $349.5 million. Table wines, meanwhile, grew 5% by volume and 6.3% by value in the same period.

Andre, Cook’s and Korbel remain the nation’s biggest sparkling wine brands, but Barefoot Bubbly, Verdi, Piper Sonoma and Mumm Napa are all seeing double-digit growth by value and volume. The $8-$12.99 segment is the fastest-growing sector, with double-digit growth posted by the higher-priced $13-$17.99 and $18-$34.99 segments. Imports have outpaced domestic sparkling wines, according to SymphonyIRI, particularly those from Italy and up-and-coming Australia. Prosecco recorded the most impressive growth year-to-date among all sparkling wine styles, surging 77% by volume and 70% in dollar terms.
