Total Wine, Other Chains Preparing To Enter Washington State

January 27, 2012

Maryland-based retailer Total Wine & More is gearing up to enter Washington state, where the recent passage of Initiative 1183 will end the state’s retail monopoly on liquor June 1. According to local media reports, Total Wine is currently scouting two retail locations in Seattle and one in Spokane. It reportedly plans to open a total of 10 Washington stores by the summer, including additional outposts in Vancouver and Tacoma. The new locations would join Total Wine’s existing 78 stores, the most recent of which opened in Sacramento, California. The Washington state venture follows Total Wine’s recent forays into Texas and New Mexico, where the company is in the process of opening stores.

Total Wine isn’t the only major beverage alcohol retailer eyeing Washington. Rival chains BevMo and Liquor Depot are also said to be exploring potential locations across the state.
