Oregon’s Sokol Blosser Extends Evolution Brand With Red Blend

February 10, 2012

Highly rated Oregon producer Sokol Blosser, whose wines are marketed by Terlato Wines International, is adding a companion red blend to its Evolution White brand. An American appellation non-vintage wine like its white counterpart, Evolution Red ($17.99 a bottle) is a Syrah-based blend of nine grapes, the rest of which Sokol Blosser is keeping secret. Alison Sokol Blosser, co-president of the family-owned company with her brother Alex, recently told Shanken News Daily that Evolution Red will compete with other super-premium red blends, notably Caymus Vineyards’ Conundrum Red, which rolled out last summer.

Sokol Blosser, which celebrated its 40th anniversary last year, has 97 acres of vineyards in Oregon’s Dundee Hills appellation. The winery produces around 80,000 cases annually across Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Muscat, Müller-Thurgau and Riesling varietals, ranging from $15 for Evolution White up through $70 for its single block Pinot Noirs.

The group’s wines have garnered 14 90-plus scores in Wine Spectator over the years, most recently a 90 for both the 2008 and 2009 vintages of Sokol Blosser Pinot Noir Dundee Hills ($38), as well as a 93 for its 2008 Pinot Noir Dundee Hills Big Tree Block ($60) and a 91 for the 2008 Pinot Noir Dundee Hills Goosepen Block ($70).
