New Belgium Brewing Co. has announced plans to build a new brewery in Asheville, North Carolina, complementing its existing brewery in Fort Collins, Colorado. Intended to strengthen the craft brewer’s East Coast distribution footprint, the $100-million Asheville brewing and packaging facility will have a capacity of 400,000 barrels, with a 200-barrel brewing system, tasting facility and on-site wastewater treatment center. Construction on the 150,000-square-foot project is expected to begin early next year and conclude by 2015. The producer of nine year-round beers—including core label Fat Tire Amber Ale—and a variety of seasonal releases, New Belgium is the third-largest craft brewer in the United States, with annual sales volume of more than 9 million (2.25-gallon) cases.
