Fairway Wines & Spirits To Open Third Location

May 8, 2012

Fairway Wines & Spirits will add its third location in the tri-state area this summer with the opening of a Woodland Park, New Jersey store. The north Jersey unit marks the most recent effort by the Fairway Market specialty grocery chain to expand into wine and spirits retailing.

The new store follows the opening of Fairway Wine & Spirits shops in Pelham Manor, New York, and in Stamford, Connecticut, in 2010. Similar to the layouts in New York and Connecticut, the New Jersey liquor store is expected to be adjacent to a new Fairway Market currently under construction in Woodland Park.

The 6,500-square-foot Stamford store offers more than 2,500 wines, over 700 varieties of distilled spirits and more than 500 beers. In addition to large national brands, the Connecticut location carries local, kosher, organic and biodynamic wines, as well as exclusive labels and what it describes as “a variety of esoteric wines from smaller vineyards.” Regular in-store events include tastings and bottle signings.

Sterling Investment Partners, a private equity firm, acquired a majority stake in the nine-unit Fairway Market chain from the founding Glickberg family five years ago. Since that time, the concept has grown rapidly, with the addition of a half dozen food stores and the launching of the wine and spirits shops. Sterling said late last year that it plans to open several stores a year for the foreseeable future. Fairway Market was founded nearly 80 years ago as a fruit and vegetable stand on Broadway in Manhattan, where the company’s flagship store is still located.
