1494 Private Whisky Investment Club Set To Open In New York

June 1, 2012

With global demand for high-end whisky on the rise, a new private whisky club in New York City is aiming to attract a wave of investors, collectors and enthusiasts. The club, called 1494, will offer a one-stop shop for whisky consultations, purchasing, storage and insurance.

Founded by whisky entrepreneur David Clelland, 1494 launches today. Throughout the summer, it will host tastings and events at various venues, with a permanent New York location slated to open in early fall. Clelland says the new venture will “act as a link between distilleries and collectors and serve as a whisky curator for its distinguished clientele.” 1494 initially will focus exclusively on Scotch whisky.

The club offers three levels of membership: Founding Members, Collectors and Connoisseurs. The Founding Members (who are granted lifetime memberships) and Collectors receive the club’s full benefits and services, while Connoisseurs can attend club tastings and events. Memberships start at $15,000 a year. 1494 offers direct and collective buying opportunities, as well as a team of board members and staff to curate collections.
