NEW: Craft Brewing And Distilling News for June 27, 2012
June 27, 2012•St. Helena, California-based Charbay Winery & Distillery, which focuses on wine and craft spirits, has been named the exclusive U.S. importer for Tequila Tapatio. The 100%-agave Tequila will be priced at $34 per 1-liter bottle. Tapatio is made at La Alteña Distillery and has been sold in Mexico for 75 years. Charbay distills its own line of small-batch spirits including vodka, Tequila, whiskey and rum, among others, as well as a line of wines and Port.
•A group of 10 Grand Rapids, Michigan-based craft brewers have teamed up to create Beer City Pale Ale. The new limited-edition offering was done to commemorate a recent poll that named Grand Rapids Beer City USA 2012—a title it shares with Asheville, North Carolina. While the Beer City Pale Ale recipe—which features Michigan-grown cascade and nugget hops—was a collaborative effort by all 10 breweries, each has produced its own individual batch, resulting in slightly varying versions. Participating breweries include Harmony Brewing Co., The Hideout Brewing Co., White Flame Brewing Co., Jaden James Brewing Co., Michigan Beer Cellar, Pike 51, The BOB, HopCat, Founders and Schmohz. Beer City Pale Ale will be available regionally on tap starting July 1.
•The founders of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, Victory Brewing Co. and Stone Brewing Co. are re-brewing Dogfish Head/Victory/Stone Saison Du BUFF, a limited edition collaborative offering. First released by Sam Calagione (Dogfish Head), Bill Covaleski (Victory) and Greg Koch (Stone) in 2010, Saison Du BUFF was created “to protest the flavorless, mass-produced, fizzy yellow lagers that dominated the marketplace,” says Koch. (BUFF stands for “Brewers United for Freedom of Flavor.”) This year, each of the three breweries has recreated its own version of the 7.7%-abv Saison Du BUFF recipe, which features culinary influences like parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme. Saison Du BUFF will be available in limited quantities on draft and in 12-ounce bottles in 18 states throughout the U.S.
