•Florida’s Indigo Wine Group is adding South Africa’s Rustenberg to its portfolio this fall. One of the original South African Cape wine estates, Rustenberg was founded in Stellenbosch in 1682. Its wines include Stellenbosch Chardonnay ($20 a bottle), Five Soldiers Chardonnay ($38), Bordeaux blend John X Merriman ($30) and Peter Barlow Cabernet Sauvignon ($49) among others. Rustenberg was previously handled in the U.S. by Cape Classics. In addition to other South African brands like Barista, Reyneke and Groot Constantia, Indigo’s portfolio includes wines from Spain, Italy, Australia, Argentina and France.
•Edrington Group has named Jaume Ferràs Santín the new global marketing manager for single malt Scotch brand The Macallan. He replaces Francis Coulter, who left the position last September. In the newly restructured role, Ferràs Santín will be charged with building The Macallan’s overall positioning and creative development, as well as working with the brand’s partners worldwide (including U.S. importer Rémy Cointreau USA). Prior to joining The Macallan team, Ferràs Santín spent five years with Bacardi Spain, most recently serving as marketing manager for Martini. He has also served as innovation manager for Bacardi’s EMEA division and group brand manager for Bacardi Spain, and has previously worked with Edrington as brand manager for The Famous Grouse.
•A number of domestic Applebee’s units have been re-dubbed “Club Applebee’s” for their emphasis on increasing late-night customer traffic with drinks specials, half-price appetizers and theme nights such as karaoke night and trivia night. In 2010, the Applebee’s chain began extending hours at select units until midnight or later, and now more than 80% of Applebee’s are open late night, but only roughly 100 units—mostly located throughout Florida—bear the Club Applebee’s nickname and promote their late night offers on Clubapplebees.com. The company does not have any plans at this time to expand the concept nationally, but will continue to promote its “open until midnight or later” message.
