Peter Zwack, Owner Of Unicum Brand, Dies At 85

August 10, 2012

Peter Zwack, honorary president of Zwack Unicum PLC, passed away on August 4 at the age of 85. Born in Budapest, Hungary, Zwack became the fifth-generation owner of Zwack distillery, producer of Unicum herb liqueur.

In 1946, Zwack was working at the family distillery when political upheaval in Hungary forced him emigrate. He first went to Italy and then to the U.S., where he helped manage an import company with Alexis Lichine. He moved back to Europe in 1970, settling in Florence, Italy, where the Unicum brand had a strong export presence.

In 1987, Zwack returned to his native Hungary, just before the fall of Communism. During the country’s privatization process in 1991, he founded Peter Zwack & Consort AG with partner Emil Underberg, repurchasing his family company from the Hungarian state and becoming chairman of the board of Zwack Unicum PLC. In 2008 his son Sándor Zwack, representing the family’s sixth generation, took over the chairmanship, while his father became honorary president.
