Angostura Rum Targets Sipping Segment With New Limited Edition Series

November 14, 2013

Trinidad-based Angostura will introduce the first installment in a new series of limited-edition rums early next year. The new entry, Angostura No. 1 ($49.99 a 750-ml.), will hit the California, New York, New Jersey, Florida and Texas markets beginning in late January. A blend of 10-12-year-old rums matured in first-fill Bourbon casks, Angostura No. 1 is being released in a batch of 9,600 bottles worldwide.

Angostura master distiller John Georges tells SND more limited-edition rums will follow. “As a company, we’re moving more toward sipping rums. That end of the market is where we expect to see our best success,” he says.

Imported to the U.S. by International Beverage Co., Angostura’s other rum expressions include Reserva ($17), 5-year-old ($19), 7-year-old ($22), 1919 ($38) and 1824 ($60). For the nine months through September, CL Financial-owned Angostura Holdings—also including the company’s namesake bitters and a host of other spirits labels—posted revenues down 1% to the equivalent of $72 million.
