Edrington To Pour £100 Million Into New Macallan Distillery
December 2, 2013Third-leading global single malt brand The Macallan is set to see a major investment in the coming years, centering around a new Speyside distillery and visitors center. The project, to which brand owner Edrington Group will devote more than £100 million ($164m), is currently in the planning stages, with work scheduled to begin in autumn 2014 and be completed in spring 2017.
Edrington is working with architects Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners on The Macallan’s new distillery, which it says will be a work of “major architectural significance” in the heart of Speyside. The investment is expected to deliver additional capacity for the malt whisky brand to meet growing demand from existing and new international markets.
“Our plan for the estate includes a contemporary distillery that embodies the international style of The Macallan and builds on the brand’s tradition of quality and craftsmanship,” said Edrington CEO Ian Curle, in announcing the move.
The Macallan has been on the rise in both the U.S. and global markets in recent years. According to Impact Databank, the brand increased 9% to 159,000 cases in the U.S. last year. Globally, The Macallan rose 6% to 715,000 cases in 2012, capping a run that’s seen it expand by nearly 60% since 2005.
