December 9, 2013•Alamo Beer Company is set to begin construction on its $8 million craft brewery near historic downtown San Antonio. The brewery is expected to produce 40,000 barrels, or 560,000 (2.25-gallon) cases in its first five to seven years of operation, with an anticipated opening in fall 2014. Alamo Beer Company, founded in 1997, plans to increase production of its golden ale with the new brewery as well as introduce a lager and various seasonals. The 18,000-square-foot complex will also include a beer hall with seating for more than 100. Introduced in 2003, Alamo Golden Ale is currently brewed in Blanco, Texas, and has expanded to retailers and on-premise establishments in West Texas, South Texas, Houston and Austin.
•Minnesota-based August Schell Brewing Co. has released a new series to commemorate the 30th anniversary of its Schell’s Pils label, which first launched in 1984. Rolling out in February, the Schell’s 30th Anniversary Pilsner Series will feature four offerings, including the brewer’s original 1984 recipe, Schell’s current Pilsner recipe, and a pair of new entries—Roggen Pils and Mandarina Bavaria Pils. Roggen Pils is billed as a spicier version of a traditional Pilsner, while Mandarina Bavaria Pils is brewed with a new German hop that features strong citrus notes. The series will be available in 12-pack samplers, containing three 12-ounce bottles of each entry, as well as sets of four 1/6-barrel formats. Additionally, in July, August Schell will follow with a second commemorative range to celebrate the 30th anniversary of its Schell’s Hefeweizen.
