Craft Brewing and Distilling New for December 18, 2013

December 18, 2013

•Eugene, Oregon’s Ninkasi Brewing Company will add a new India red ale—Dawn of the Red—to its Special Release Series in January. Founding brewer and co-owner Jamie Floyd describes the hoppy beer—which will be available through April—as having a juicy flavor profile with mangos, papaya and pineapple. Dawn of the Red’s artwork draws from the classic zombie movie “Dawn of the Dead.” The 7.0%-abv IRA will be available in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, California, Alaska, Vancouver and British Columbia in 22-ounce bottles, 22-ounce four-packs and on draft. Ninkasi’s Flagship beers include Total Domination IPA, Tricerahops Double IPA, Believer Double Red, Oatis Oatmeal Stout and Vanilla Oatis Oatmeal Stout.

•Cooperstown, New York-based Brewery Ommegang will release the third beer in its Game of Thrones series, Fire & Blood, at the end of next March, and is asking fans to decide on the style of the fourth Game of Thrones brew, which will follow in the fall. Fire & Blood is a 6.8%-abv red ale made with pilsner, spelt, rye and other specialty malts, hopped with Styrian Golding and German Tettnang hops and spiced with ancho chilies. Voting on the fourth Game of Thrones beer has already started on Ommegang’s Facebook page, with options including a sweet Belgian-style Dubbel, a rich Belgian-style Quadrupel ale, a golden Tripel and the strong Khal Quadrupel. The winning beer will be announced in spring. The first two beers from the series, Iron Throne Blonde Ale and Take the Black Stout, both proved “hugely popular,” Ommegang said.
