Craft Brewing and Distilling News for December 30, 2013

December 30, 2013

•Grand Rapids, Michigan-based Founders Brewing will introduce Smoked Porter, an addition to its Backstage Series, beginning in February. The company says Smoked Porter is brewed with a combination of beech wood-smoked barley and oak-smoked wheat malt along with a generous helping of chocolate malt. It’s a style Founders has discussed brewing for a decade, says co-founder Dave Engbers, but which hadn’t fit into the production schedule in the past. With the investment in an experimental pilot system this past summer, more such brews will be forthcoming from the Backstage Series. Founders Smoked Porter will be available in 750-ml. bottles in Michigan and on draft across the brewer’s distribution footprint.

•Sarene Craft Beer Distributors, LLC, a new wholesaler dedicated to craft beers, will launch in the New York City metro area in January. Owned by craft veterans Matt and Eric Schulman, Sarene’s portfolio will initially include five producers: Lakefront Brewery, a 35,000-barrel operation located in Milwaukee; Akron, Ohio’s Thirsty Dog Brewing, which is set to undertake a multimillion-dollar expansion to boost capacity; Wisconsin-based Central Waters Brewing, known for barrel-aged offerings like Bourbon Cherry Stout and Bourbon Barrel Barleywine; New Jersey-based Carton Brewing, known for its flagship session ale Boat Beer; and up-and-coming Alexandria, Virginia brewer Port City, which is entering New York for the first time with Sarene.
