Burgundy Exports Slide By Volume But Eke Out Value Gain

May 27, 2014

Burgundy wine exports fell 12% by volume in the first quarter of 2014, as shipments to key nations like the U.S. (-14%), U.K. (-28%) and Japan (-11%) saw double-digit decreases, according to the BIVB trade group. Burgundy exports to the U.S., U.K. and Japan also fell by value, declining 1%, 7% and 8% respectively. However, strong growth in shipments to China—up 11% by volume and 28% by value—buoyed Burgundy’s revenue total, which registered a 1% increase. Commenting on the Chinese surge, the BIVB stated, “A share of imports (to China) which previously went through Hong Kong seem now to be going direct to mainland China.”
