Impact Databank: Imported Sparkling Wines Rise 5.5% On Prosecco’s Surge
June 17, 2014Several fast-growing Italian brands are leading the charge for the imported sparkling wine category in the U.S. market, which rose 5.5% to 6.7 million cases in 2013, according to Impact Databank.
The imported sparkling wine category’s two biggest brands—Freixenet USA’s flagship Cava and Bacardi’s Martini & Rossi—saw single-digit declines last year, but strong double-digit gains by CIV USA’s Jaume Serra Cristalino Cava and Mionetto USA’s namesake Prosecco, among others, helped lead the overall category upward. An Impact “Hot Brand,” Mionetto has been one of the key labels propelling Prosecco’s recent climb in the U.S., where the segment grew 27% to reach approximately 2.3 million cases in 2013, according to Nielsen data.
“Prosecco is the primary factor behind the expansion of the sparkling wine category, and a major contributor to the continuing strength of Italian wine sales here in the U.S.,” Mionetto USA CEO Enore Ceola recently told SND, noting that less than 20 years ago, Prosecco’s U.S. volume hovered at only around 500 cases.
Several other Italian bubblies joined Mionetto as Hot Brands this year. Those standouts included Gallo’s La Marca, the eponymous sparklers of Zonin USA and Riondo USA, and Prestige Wine & Spirits Group’s Risata, each of which added at least 60,000 cases in incremental volume in 2013.
Meanwhile, in the Champagne category, which rose 0.5% overall last year, the picture was mixed. Among the category’s top brands, Moët Hennessy’s market-leading duo of Veuve Clicquot (+6.3%) and Moët & Chandon (-7%) saw contrasting fortunes.
