William Grant, Rémy Reportedly Mulling Drambuie Buy

July 22, 2014

William Grant & Sons is reportedly eyeing Scottish liqueur brand Drambuie, which was put on the auction block by owners the MacKinnon family in May. According to a Sky News report, William Grant is among the brand’s initial bidders, alongside other potential suitors including Rémy Cointreau. Industry analysts believe Drambuie would complement William Grant’s existing portfolio, which includes the Glenfiddich, Balvenie and Grant’s Scotch brands, among others. William Grant didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. The MacKinnon family has valued the deal at around £100 million ($169m).

Currently produced by Suntory’s Morrison Bowmore, Drambuie posted a net sales decline of 3% to £22 million ($37m) in its last full fiscal year, ended last June. The brand sells roughly 70,000 cases in the U.S., where it’s handled by Bacardi USA.
