•Graton, California-based Purple Wine + Spirits is extending its Avalon brand with a 100% Chardonnay offering. Retailing at $13 a bottle, Avalon “CHARD” is sourced from vineyards in Santa Barbara and the Russian River Valley. It began shipping nationally on May 1. Avalon’s new Chardonnay joins its existing “CAB” Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, in the brand line.

•California winery Silver Oak has agreed to acquire the half of Missouri-based A&K Cooperage that it doesn’t already own. Silver Oak, which took its original 50% stake in the barrel-making group in 2000, says the deal makes it the first North American winery to own and operate its own American oak cooperage. The A&K acquisition will secure Silver Oak’s supply of aged stave wood—at a time when barrels are in high demand due to the rising craft spirits movement—and allow it to maintain its stringent barrel-making standards, the company added. Cabernet Sauvignon-focused Silver Oak is owned by the Duncan family, whose holdings include four winemaking facilities and tasting rooms located across Napa Valley, Alexander Valley and Russian River Valley, as well as 15 estate vineyards.
