Craft Brewing and Distilling News for July 9, 2015July 9, 2015
•Hawaii-based Kona Brewing Company, part of Craft Brew Alliance (CBA), has seen sales of its Big Wave Golden Ale jump 66.2% over the past year, according to IRI data. That gain far outpaced the growth of the overall craft beer category, which rose 16% over the same period, and Big Wave’s progress accounted for nearly a quarter of the growth within the overall golden ale category. The 4.4%-abv entry, which made its mainland debut in 2012, is in national distribution. Kona is CBA’s largest brand by volume, with shipments totaling 300,000 barrels last year.
•Paso Robles, California’s Firestone Walker Brewing Company is bringing back its barrel-aged Helldorado as part of its 2015 Proprietor’s Vintage Series. Originally created as an occasional draft-only entry, Helldorado is billed as a blonde barley wine, brewed with El Dorado hops and aged in retired spirits barrels. This year’s edition will be limited to 3,500 cases, available across select U.S. markets starting July 18 and retailing at around $16.99 a 22-ounce bottle.
