News Briefs for September 28, 2015
September 28, 2015•Francis Ford Coppola has unveiled the new identity of his company’s winery property in Geyserville, California. Coppola has renamed the site as the Virginia Dare Winery, in honor of the first English child born in the New World in 1587. Dare was part of the so-called Lost Colony on Roanoke Island that vanished in the late 1500s. Virginia Dare Winery will serve as the home base for Coppola’s American Pioneer Wine Growers unit, whose wines include The White Doe, Manteo, Two Arrowheads and The Lost Colony.
•Control state spirits volume rose 2.9% in the 12 months through August, according to NABCA, while spirits’ dollar sales grew 5.5% over the same period. The results included a 1.2% decline in volume and a 0.7% increase in value during August, with the softer results for that month possibly related to the later timing of Labor Day this year, pushing holiday sales into September. Control state wine volume, meanwhile, grew 1.1% over the past 12 months, but fell 1.3% in August.
