Gallo Expands LUX Wines Portfolio, Adding Barolo’s Renato Ratti Winery

February 25, 2016

E.&J. Gallo continues to up its presence in premium Italian wine, signing a deal with Renato Ratti winery to be the Piedmont producer’s exclusive importer in the United States. Renato Ratti will join LUX Wines, Gallo’s growing luxury wine group, which includes other top Italian brands Allegrini, Poggio al Tesoro and Pieropan.

“Barolo is one of Italy’s most prestigious red wine regions and Renato Ratti has played a very important role in the region’s history and development,” said Roger Nabedian, senior vice president of Gallo’s Premium Wine Division, noting that Ratti was among the first to produce a single-vineyard Barolo in the 1960s and created the first detailed map of the region’s historical crus in the 1970s.

Located in the town of La Morra, Ratti consistently produces several top Barolos, including single-vineyard wines that have been named to Wine Spectator’s Top 100 in previous years. Founded by the late Renato Ratti in 1965, it’s now run by his son Pietro. LUX Wines will be distributing Ratti’s Barolo Marcenasco, Barolo Conca, Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata, Langhe Nebbiolo and Barbera d’Asti.

For Gallo, which was founded by the sons of Italian immigrants, the creation of the LUX Wines portfolio in 2014 marked a newfound emphasis on luxury imports. Gallo says the vision for the LUX unit is “to represent iconic wine suppliers from the most noteworthy appellations in the world.”
