Joe Wagner Partners With Santa Barbara’s Alta Maria Vineyards

March 24, 2016

Joe Wagner, owner of Copper Cane Wine & Provisions, has announced a collaboration with James Ontiveros of Alta Maria Vineyards, based in Santa Barbara County’s Santa Maria AVA. Wagner will work with Ontiveros on all Alta Maria wines moving forward, starting with the winery’s 2014 Santa Barbara County Chardonnay and Pinot Noir ($15), which are debuting exclusively in Kroger stores nationwide this spring.

Wagner and Ontiveros have worked together for more than a decade on vineyard projects in Santa Barbara County, including the Belle Glos Clark & Telephone Vineyard and sites farmed by Ontiveros for use in Meiomi Pinot Noir, which Wagner sold to Constellation last year for $315 million.

Alta Maria, a small-production winery founded by Ontiveros and fellow winemaker Paul Wilkins, also produces Santa Maria AVA bottlings of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, as well as single-vineyard wines. Those tiers are reserved for by-the-glass listings in national on-premise accounts, very limited retail accounts and the direct-to-consumer channel.
