September 27, 2016•Brooklyn-based Sixpoint Brewery has linked with Edrington single malt Scotch brand Highland Park to launch a pair of limited-edition beers, Rune and Sköll. Intended to be paired with Highland Park 12-year-old, Rune is a golden oat ale made with honey malts, while Sköll, which was designed to pair with Highland Park Dark Origins, is a dark ale featuring coffee and chocolate notes. Rune and Sköll are slated to roll out across New York this October, available at select on-premise accounts for a limited time. Part of the Edrington Americas portfolio, Highland Park grew 10% to 20,000 cases in the U.S. last year, according to Impact Databank.
•Blue Lake, California’s Mad River Brewing Co. has increased its annual production capacity from 15,000 barrels to 60,000 barrels as it expands its portfolio and distribution footprint. The investment is allowing the company to distribute to new markets Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, Idaho and Alaska. Mad River is also rolling out new packaging and rebranding parts of its flagship Steelhead and Jamaica brands. Steelhead Extra Pale Ale and Jamaica Red Ale are unaffected by the changes, but Steelhead Double IPA will re-launch as Slammin’ Salmon, Steelhead Stout will become Redwood Stout and Steelhead Porter will become Uniontown Porter. Also, Jamaica Sunset IPA has been renamed Mad River IPA. Meanwhile, Mad River is adding River Days Session IPA to its year-round portfolio.
•Indianapolis-based Sun King Brewery is developing a new 15,000-square-foot craft distillery and taproom in Carmel, Indiana, expected to open next fall. Founder and head brewer Dave Colt will oversee distillery operations for small-batch spirits production. Sun King plans to release unique flagship spirits in addition to traditional spirits like whiskey, gin and rum and seasonal offerings. The Sun King Distillery and Tap Room will be located at the north end of Carmel’s Midtown Plaza and near the Monon Trail.
