January 23, 2017

•New Liberty Distilling has partnered with fellow Philadelphia-based company Quaker City Mercantile, the creative agency that helped develop brands like Hendrick’s gin, Sailor Jerry rum and Lo-Fi Aperitifs. Their first initiative will center around the release of New Liberty’s Pennsylvania Dutch Malt Whiskey ($50 a 750-ml.), a double pot-distilled offering made with 100% Pennsylvania-grown malted barley and aged in American oak. The new entry is launching this month in Pennsylvania, Maryland and Washington, D.C. Quaker City, led by CEO Steven Grasse, is also helping New Liberty to rebrand its Kinsey Whiskey label, which is expected to relaunch in the next few months. New Liberty is helmed by Bluecoat gin founder Robert Cassell, who is also co-founder and master distiller of Ireland’s Connacht Whiskey Co.

•Sonoma County’s Bear Republic Brewing Co. has added Hop Shovel to its year-round lineup, releasing the IPA in six-packs for the first time. The 7.5%-abv entry was previously a draft-only offering. Made with Mosaic, Meridian and Denali hops, Hop Shovel is the 10th brew in Bear Republic’s year-round stable, joining Racer 5, Grand-Am, Pace Car Racer and Double Aught, among others.

•St. Louis-based Schlafly Beer has kicked off its Hop Allocation Series with the rollout of Schlafly Black IPA. Black IPA marks the first entry in the new lineup, which will feature an IPA launch every six weeks throughout 2017. Made with midnight wheat and a variety of Northwest hops, Black IPA will be available through the end of March on draft, as well as in six-packs ($10 each), which will be sold across the brewer’s 14-market footprint.
