Diageo Beer Co. To Build New Guinness Brewery In Maryland

February 1, 2017

Diageo Beer Company USA is set to build a U.S. version of its Dublin-based Guinness Open Gate Brewery, ending a 63-year absence from brewing in the U.S. The facility will be added to Diageo’s existing operations in Relay, Maryland.

The new Guinness site will include a midsized Guinness brewery, visitor center and microbrewery, as well as packaging and warehousing operations. It will serve as a base for producing new Guinness beers for the U.S. market.

“Given the success of our Open Gate Brewery in Dublin and the popularity of beer tourism in the U.S., we’re confident that Americans will welcome the opportunity to come experience Guinness brewing in Baltimore County,” said Tom Day, president of Diageo Beer Company USA.

Diageo aims to open the facility this fall, in conjunction with the 200th anniversary of the first Guinness imports to the U.S. In Diageo’s recent half-year financial results, organic net sales of Diageo Beer Company USA increased 3%. —Kimberly Tharel
