South Carolina Supreme Court Strikes Down Retail License Limit

March 30, 2017

South Carolina appears poised to lift its restrictions on the number of stores a liquor licensee may operate in the state, following a ruling by the state’s Supreme Court. South Carolina retailers have previously been restricted to three outlets per licensee.

The law was challenged by Total Wine & More, which operates liquor stores in Charleston, Greenville and Columbia, South Carolina. Following the ruling, in which South Carolina’s high court decried the limit as without basis except as a protectionist measure, Total Wine plans to expand its presence in the Palmetto State, reports The State newspaper, beginning with a fourth store in Aiken.
