Scotland’s Wemyss Unveils New Gin Distillery

May 4, 2017

This July, Scotland’s Wemyss family will open a new Fife-based distillery for its Darnley’s View Gin brand, imported by Palm Bay International. Up to now, Darnley’s has been distilled in London. Owner William Wemyss tells SND the new facility will allow for more experimentation and new product development.

“Darnley’s is a gin created and inspired by a Scottish family,” said Wemyss, “and now it’s going to be produced in Scotland as well.” The facility, located near the family’s existing Kingsbarns Scotch whisky distillery, will produce 300-liter batches of gin and is slated to run once a day at the outset, Wemyss added. Darnley’s View London Dry Gin ($32.99 a 750-ml.) and Spiced Gin ($36.99) are imported by Palm Bay and distributed in 35 states. The brand will debut a Navy Strength offering in the final quarter of this year, as well as new packaging.

In addition to Darnley’s, Wemyss is also present in the U.S. with its namesake Scotch whisky range, including both single malts and blends retailing from about $45 to $250 a bottle. Wemyss said Darnley’s and the Scotch portfolio are doing well in the U.S. with Palm Bay leading the charge. This year, the company will export about 5,000 cases of Darnley’s to the U.S., and a slightly smaller amount of Scotch. —Julia Higgins
