Whisky Advocate Poised To Unveil Its Whisky Of The Year

November 16, 2017

Whisky Advocate magazine will reveal its Whisky of the Year this morning. The unveiling begins at 11 o’clock with the naming of whiskies number 3 and 2, followed by the announcement of the magazine’s Whisky of the Year at 11:30.

The countdown to Whisky of the Year began on Monday, when whiskies number 10, 9 and 8 were named. Number 10 was Speyside single malt Glen Moray 18-year-old ($90), while number 9 was Islay single malt Bruichladdich Islay Barley 2010 ($65). At number 8 was Tamdhu Batch Strength 002 ($90), the Speyside single malt clocking in at 58.5%-abv.

The march to number-1 continued on Tuesday with the unveiling of whiskies number 7, 6 and 5. At number 7 was blended Scotch whisky brand Compass Box Spice Tree Extravaganza ($140), while Islay single malt Ardbeg An Oa ($60) came in at number 6. Number 5 was Rampur Select ($65), an Indian single malt from Radico Khaitan Distillery in the foothills of the Himalayas. Yesterday, Islay single malt Lagavulin 12-year-old ($130), from Diageo’s 2017 Special Releases, was named the number-4 whisky.

This morning’s announcement of whiskies 3, 2 and the Whisky of the Year will be capped tonight by the magazine’s WhiskyFest New York event, which this year celebrates its 20th anniversary. It’s one of two major events hosted by M. Shanken Communications this month. The other one comes this weekend (November 17-19), when Whisky Advocate’s sister publication Cigar Aficionado stages its annual Big Smoke Las Vegas, which features three days of tastings and seminars.
