Craft Brewing and Distilling News for January 3, 2018

January 3, 2018

•New Belgium Brewing has entered the hazy IPA market with Voodoo Ranger Juicy Haze IPA. The 7.5%-abv unfiltered IPA is made with Citra, Cascade, Centennial, Simcoe and Nugget hops, and is fermented with American Hefeweizen yeast. Juicy Haze IPA is the fourth permanent addition to the Voodoo Ranger lineup and is now available nationwide on draft and in six-packs of 12-ounce bottles. In March, Juicy Haze IPA will be available in four-packs of 16-ounce cans. New Belgium plans to add three other special releases to the Voodoo Ranger family in 2018.

•Cincinnati, Ohio’s Urban Artifact has released Pocket Watch, a Midwest Fruit Tart Ale. The 8%-abv ale is brewed with Concord grapes, black currents, red plums and vanilla beans for a moderately acidic, fruit-forward beer. The relatively uncommon style is characterized by bright fruit flavors and low bitterness and Urban Artifact’s example is brewed with the company’s house strain of lactobacillus. Pocket Watch is available now on draft and in 12-ounce cans in Ohio and Northern Kentucky. Looking forward, Urban Artifact is set to release Glimmer, a tart IPA; Flash Lamp, a tart white ale; and Owler, a sour brown ale brewed with vanilla, in 2018.

•North Carolina-based Catawba Brewing has launched Chocolate Cherry Stout in its four tasting rooms. The 6.7%-abv beer is the final release in Catawba’s 2017 Small Batch program. The stout was aged on locally sourced cacao beans and then conditioned on tart cherries. Catawba’s 2018 Small Batch releases begin again on January 4 with the release of a Russian Imperial Stout.
