Scotch Whisky Exports Reach New Record High, As U.S. Shipments Rise By 8%

February 12, 2018

Driven by strong growth in the U.S.—its largest export market by value—Scotch whisky export shipments reached a new record high of £4.36 billion ($6b) in 2017 on an increase of 9%, according to the Scotch Whisky Association. By volume, Scotch export shipments grew 1.6% to about 1.23 billion bottles. Single malt Scotch whiskies continue to play a key role in premiumizing the category, as their export value vaulted by 14% to £1.2 billion ($1.66b) last year. In the U.S., Scotch shipments totaled £922 million ($1.27b) on an 8% increase in 2017, with the market more than twice as large as the second-largest export destination for Scotch, France. In volume terms, Scotch shipments to the U.S. rose 7.4% to 127 million bottles last year. —Daniel Marsteller
