Johnson Brothers Expands In North Carolina, Acquiring Mutual Distributing

Johnson Brothers, one of the U.S. market’s leading beverage alcohol wholesalers, is expanding its footprint in North Carolina with the acquisition of wine and beer distributor Mutual Distributing.Mutual, which has 700 employees and seven branches throughout the state, counts among its key suppliers Constellation, Trinchero, Banfi, Zonin, Foley Family Wines, Terlato, Heineken, and a slate of local craft beers. It’s among the largest wine and beer distributors in the North Carolina market.

Johnson has been present in North Carolina since 1975 and distributes to the major markets of Raleigh, Charlotte, Greensboro, and Winston-Salem. With the acquisition of Mutual, owned by Bill Kennedy and Leo Daughtry since 1985, Johnson will expand both its geographical reach and its brand portfolio in the Tar Heel State.

After entering the New York and West Virginia markets in recent years, Johnson Brothers is present in a total of 24 states. Shanken’s Impact Newsletter projects the company’s revenues to rise 3.5% to $1.96 billion this year.—Daniel Marsteller
