News Alert: Bill Newlands To Replace Rob Sands As Constellation’s CEO

October 17, 2018

In a major move, Constellation Brands has announced that it will name Bill Newlands as CEO, replacing Rob Sands, effective March 1. Newlands is currently Constellation’s president and COO. Sands will become chairman of the company, replacing his brother Richard, who will become executive vice chairman.

Newlands, a longtime executive in the industry, joined Constellation in 2015 as chief growth officer. Previously, he held key executive posts with Beam, Moet Hennessy, and Wine.com during his 30-year career. He was named president earlier this year.

“Since joining Constellation Brands in 2015, Bill has made a significant impact on our company, finding ways to leverage our unique capabilities as a leading total beverage alcohol provider to meet consumers’ evolving needs and accelerate growth,” said Rob Sands. “Bill understands what it takes to succeed in this rapidly evolving market and he’s the right person to lead our company going forward.”

Rob Sands has helmed Constellation for 11 years since replacing Richard as CEO in 2007. During that time, Constellation has grown into a beer behemoth as the marketer of brands such as Corona and Modelo, and continued to expand in wine and spirits, both through organic growth and acquisitions such as The Prisoner Wine Co. and High West Distillery among many others. The company also placed a $4 billion bet on the cannabis industry with its recent investment in Canada’s Canopy Growth. In its latest fiscal year, Constellation posted sales up 3% to $7.6 billion and operating income up 13% to $2.5 billion.—Daniel Marsteller
