Massachusetts Debuts First Recreational Cannabis Stores On The East Coast

November 20, 2018

Massachusetts opened its first recreational cannabis stores today, marking the first recreational outlets on the East Coast. The two shops—Cultivate in Leicester and New England Treatment Access in Northampton—opened two years after Massachusetts voters passed a legalization measure. Eager customers formed lines at both stores overnight in anticipation, the Boston Globe reports.

Under Massachusetts law, government ID is required as proof of meeting the minimum purchase age of 21, and minors without proper medical registration may not enter the premises, even with their parents. An eighth of an ounce of cannabis costs $50, and consumers may purchase up to one ounce of cannabis flower or 5 grams of concentrate in a single transaction.—Danny Sullivan
