•Spanish wine producer El Coto de Rioja has appointed New Jersey’s Opici Wines as its exclusive U.S. importer.

El Coto produces wines from the Rioja region that range from around $11 to nearly $60 at retail. The wine producer, part of Grupo Baron de Ley, sources its grapes from across the three Rioja subregions where the company owns 2,000 acres of estate vineyards. Previously, Frederick Wildman & Sons handled El Coto de Rioja in the U.S., where the brand sells around 35,000 cases.

•Quintessential Wines is launching two new wines from its California-based Samuel Charles brand nationwide. Samuel Charles’s newcomers include an Oak Knoll Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon retailing at $80 and a High Valley Sauvignon Blanc positioned at $25. The Samuel Charles brand, owned by Quintessential’s Kreps family, recently debuted in a handful of western states with a North Coast Cabernet ($30).

•New York-based importer and distributor Vias Imports Ltd. has added five Italian wineries to its portfolio, effective immediately. The Vias lineup now includes Leone de Castris, a winery in Italy’s Puglia region that offers the Five Roses rosé brand, among an array of other wines; Piedmont’s La Ganghija, which specializes in Barbaresco; the Garesio and Davide Fregonese estates, also in Piedmont with a focus on high-end Barolo and Barbera wines; and Giovanni Rosso, a Sicilian property that produces a variety of Nerello Mascalese-based red wines and Carricante-centric white wines. All offerings from the newly added estates are now available nationwide.

•Guarachi Wine Partners has promoted Bill Matthes to vice president of national sales. Matthes, who was previously Guarachi’s division vice president for the Eastern U.S., has 26 years of drinks industry experience, including time with Constellation and Delicato, among others. In his new role, Matthes will report directly to company founder Alex Guarachi.
