Gallo Adds To Spirits Stable With Gruppo Montenegro Brands

February 26, 2019

E.&J. Gallo has augmented its growing spirits portfolio, agreeing to become the exclusive U.S. importer for Italy’s Gruppo Montenegro. Under the deal, Gallo will import the company’s Amaro Montenegro, Select Aperitivo, and Vecchia Romagna Brandy.

Britt West, Gallo’s vice president of spirits marketing, tells SND that Montenegro’s range will allow Gallo to play in the growing bitters segment in the U.S. “Bitter liqueurs and aperitifs in general are experiencing tremendous growth in the U.S., but we still have a great deal of opportunity to catch up with their overall global success,” West says. “The on-premise has been and will continue to be instrumental to building consumer trial, and we see the affinity tipping into the retail trade as well.” West adds that Montenegro will complement Gallo’s existing luxury spirits portfolio, which includes Diplomatico rum, The Dalmore and Jura single malt Scotch whiskies, and Argonaut and Germain-Robin brandies, among others.

Amaro Montenegro ($38) has been rising at double-digit rates over the last four years and now sells about 15,000 9-liter cases in the U.S., according to Robert Cullins, regional director, Americas at Gruppo Montenegro.
