Whisky Advocate On Legent, Beam Suntory’s New Bourbon

March 8, 2019

As the world of whisky expands, blenders are crossing borders to craft unique whiskies. Ever since Suntory Holdings acquired Beam for $16 billion in 2014, whisky fans have been hoping for a collaboration product that melds Suntory’s Japanese whisky expertise and Beam’s Bourbon heritage. This week, just such a bottling finally arrived.

Jim Beam master distiller Fred Noe and Suntory master blender Shinji Fukuyo have combined forces to create a new whiskey label called Legent. It’s the first new Bourbon brand from Jim Beam to emerge since the early 1990s.

Retailing at $35 a bottle, Legent is a 47% abv offering that combines straight Bourbon with Bourbons finished in red wine and Sherry casks. Noe oversaw the whiskey’s distillation and Fukuyo lent his expertise to the finishing and blending processes. Whisky Advocate has all the details on the new category-crossing blend.—Susannah Skiver Barton
